Do you have to play varsity basketball as a freshman to play d-1 college basketball?

Question by azbballer: Do you have to play varsity basketball as a freshman to play d-1 college basketball?
im 5″10 145 (and still growing)
i was playing varsity in summer league and am playing varsity in fall league and avg maybe 3 points a game with only about 3 min a game.
I want to play D-1 college basketball
Ive received recruiting letters from d-3 colleges already. Is it probable for me to play d-1
Should i just play JV? we are not allowed to play both

    Yea you can Division 1. Not sure about schools like UNC, Duke, Texas, etc. But there are plenty of Division 1 programs you can apply to and will accept you.

    My best advice is to join the highest competitive league you have around you to showcase your talent.

    By the way, 145?!?! Even in Division 3, there is a serious dedication to hitting the gym. I couldn’t recommend it more. Good luck

    no… D1 is a pretty broad spectrum. You can have a good senior year and get offers to play at some trash school. I would drop down to JV if I were you tho. Your not likely to get better on that bench

    playing varsity freshman year at a good basketball school is enough to play d2 or d3. if you are starting freshman year on varsity, then you can probably play d1 if you go to an urban school. most d1 basketball players have been on their varsity team since the 8th grade so you’re probably d2 or d3.
